Article published in Journal of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics

February 11th, 2010

Our article entitled “Nutrition Tailored to the Individual? Not Just Yet – Realigning Nutrigenomic Science with Contemporary Society” has just been published in Journal of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics.

JNN

About a decade ago, scientists and science journalists presented nutrigenomics as a grand promise that each of us would soon know which foods fit in our personal healthy diet. Meanwhile, expectations have been adjusted to fit a changed reality. Simultaneously, societal issues surrounding personalized nutrition continue to rise, including whether consumers need it, food industry can produce it, all relevant stakeholders are willing and able to work together, and if it is a desirable way to go for nutrition. The commentary below reports the main results of 6 research projects that focused on nutrigenomics and its role in society.

Global Risk Report 2010

February 1st, 2010

The Global Risks Report 2010 highlights a number of slow-moving risks exacerbated by the financial crisis and global economic downturn, and stresses the continued need to further enhance global resilience to risks. Global governance gaps, an issue already to the fore in Global Risks 2009, continues to be at the nexus of global risks and the need for coordinated global action is increasingly urgent.

Nanokaravaan toert door Nederland

January 22nd, 2010

Article “Anticipating emerging genomics technologies” published

December 16th, 2009

The article “Anticipating emerging genomics technologies: The role of patents and publication for research and policy strategies” by Wouter Boon and myself has just been published in the Genomics, Society and Policy Journal.

GSP

Abstract
There is an increasing interest in scanning and assessing the science and technology landscape for emerging technologies – such as those based on genomics knowledge – because innovations are beneficial to businesses and nations, and because of the Collingridge dilemma. The latter concerns the uncertainty and manageability of technology in its early development phases versus the more solidified later stages. In this context, the assessment of upcoming scientific and technological (sub)fields or “hot spots” is of interest. In this paper we focus on methods to identify hot spots in pharmacogenomics and nutrigenomics and how this method can contribute to policy strategies. Moreover, the bibliometric results contribute to our understanding of hot spots within these genomics subfields. We answer the following leading research question: What are the main research fields of emerging pharmacogenomics and nutrigenomics technologies and how do these impact policy strategies? First, this paper introduces a novel method for identifying hot spots in emerging technologies. Following this method, pharmacogenomics and nutrigenomics show an above-average growth in patent applications. Patent search also suggests that for pharmacogenomics, countries such as Italy and France, and subfields such as cancer genomics are highly visible. For nutrigenomics, the Netherlands and Austria are important countries, while the dairy subfield proves to be a hot spot. Second, we discuss implications for policy strategies. We argue that it is difficult for policymakers to follow hot spots when they design their policy, because of the inherent tendency to “nurture” winners instead of “picking” fundamental new winners. Policymakers should be aware of this bias and research should address this issue by, for example, complementing the hot spot analysis with more interactive methods.

TEDx Amsterdam

November 19th, 2009

TEDx Amsterdam was not just an interesting well-organized conference on a variety of interesting subjects, it was an energizing experience! The first TEDx Talk – one of my favorites – was given by Frans Timmermans, Minister for European Affairs and was titled “Be like Jack Sparrow; embrace your fears”.

MVI@Nemo

November 18th, 2009

knock knock, who’s there…

November 17th, 2009

SOMETHING big is out there beyond the visible edge of our universe. That’s the conclusion of the largest analysis to date of over 1000 galaxy clusters streaming in one direction at blistering speeds. Some researchers say this so-called “dark flow” is a sign that other universes nestle next door.

NanoNed lecture at UNESCO Summer School

September 15th, 2009

The NanoNed office was invited to give a lecture during the UNESCO-IHE Summer School on “Nanotechnology for water and wastewater treatment”. The UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education was established in 2003. It carries out research, education and capacity building activities in the fields of water, environment and infrastructure.

The lecture focused on 1) innovation policy (for emerging technologies) and 2) the NanoNed programme:

During the lecture reference was made to Michael Pritchard’s ‘nanofilter water bottle’:
